What is CA 15-3?

CA 15-3 (Cancer Antigen 15-3) is a protein that is produced by normal breast cells. In some cases, it is produced in higher amounts by breast cancer cells, which then shed the protein into the bloodstream. A simple blood test can measure the level of CA 15-3 circulating in the body.

Like other tumour markers, CA 15-3 is not a perfect indicator. It is not typically used as a primary screening tool for women without symptoms or a prior diagnosis, because elevated levels can be caused by factors other than cancer, and conversely, not all breast cancers cause CA 15-3 levels to rise. [1]

Non-Cancerous Causes of Elevated CA 15-3

It is reassuring to know that a raised CA 15-3 level does not automatically indicate a serious problem. Several benign conditions can cause the levels of this protein to increase, including:

  • Benign breast conditions
  • Liver disease (such as cirrhosis or hepatitis)
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Pregnancy

Because of these variables, CA 15-3 results must always be interpreted carefully by a medical professional, taking into account the individual’s complete medical history and other diagnostic information.

The Clinical Utility of CA 15-3

The primary use of the CA 15-3 marker is in the monitoring of breast health over time, particularly for individuals who have already been diagnosed with certain conditions. In these cases, tracking the levels of CA 15-3 can provide doctors with valuable information about how the body is responding to treatment or if a condition is progressing. [1]

While it may not be a frontline screening tool, understanding your baseline levels of markers like CA 15-3 can be part of a comprehensive approach to health awareness. It provides an additional layer of data that, when discussed with a healthcare provider, can contribute to a more nuanced understanding of your body.

Proactive Health Management

Taking an active interest in your health means gathering information that can help you make informed decisions. Comprehensive blood panels, such as the Tumour Markers (Female) Blood Test from Clinilabs, include the measurement of CA 15-3 alongside other relevant markers.

This test can help provide insight into your unique biomarker profile. While it is not a substitute for regular medical check-ups and established screening programmes, it can form part of a proactive approach, empowering you with data that may support informed conversations with a healthcare professional about your ongoing breast health and overall wellbeing.
