FAQs
What is SHBG?
Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG) is a protein produced in the liver that binds to sex hormones, such as testosterone and oestradiol, and carries them through the bloodstream.
Why not just measure total testosterone or oestradiol?
SHBG affects how much hormone is “free” and active in the body. Measuring SHBG alongside total testosterone/oestradiol allows doctors to calculate free hormone levels, which are often more clinically relevant.
What symptoms might suggest abnormal SHBG?
In women, symptoms may include irregular or absent periods, infertility, acne, excess hair growth, or menopausal-type symptoms. In men, they may include low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, infertility, reduced muscle mass, or fatigue.
